Amend It Like Beckham: Voters Move Miami Closer To MLS Soccer Stadium, Complex

By Barry Janoff

November 7, 2018: Amid all the political turmoil this week, soccer icon David Beckham and partners moved a large step closer toward resolving the situation regarding securing property to construct their proposed stadium.

Voters in Miami on Tuesday approved a proposal allowing the city of Miami to negotiate a 99-year lease with Beckham and club ownership for Inter Miami CF to build a soccer-specific venue and surrounding commercial complex on a 58-acre property that currently is the Melreese Country Club and golf course, owned by the city.

Beckham's Club Internacional de Futbol Miami was officially named a Major League Soccer expansion team this past January, scheduled to start play for the 2020 MLS season.

“I started this dream five and a half years ago — to bring a team to Miami, to bring a team to this great city,” Beckham said during a rally on Tuesday night after the vote was secured, with 60% of voters approving the move to negotiate for the land for Miami Freedom Park.

“To bring a team to you, the people. We’ve had some speed bumps along the way. We’ve had a few problems along the way. (But) we’ve proved to the world that persistence, patience, makes things happen.

“We are going to bring a championship winning team," said Beckham. “We are going to bring great players. We are going to create homegrown talent.”

Beckham’s partnership group also includes Jorge Mas, José Mas and Marcelo Claure.

Miami Freedom Park is scheduled to include the 25,000 seat stadium, a hotel and retail and office space, with a current price tag of $1 billion, to be privately financed, according to Beckham and partners.

“Today is a historic day for the sport in our country, and another building block in our vision to become a soccer nation,” Don Garber, MLS commissioner, said via the league.

“Inter Miami CF’s plan for a world-class soccer stadium as the keystone for Miami Freedom Park will help transform the city of Miami and be a hub for soccer fans from all over South Florida . . . We look forward to Inter Miami CF’s launch in 2020.”

The stadium still has numerous hurdles to overcome before ground can be broken, including lease negotiations between city officials and club owners, receiving approval from at least four of the five city commissioners and legal challenges.

Also among the issues: $35 million needed to clean up toxic waste, according to local officials.

"We’ve had some speed bumps, a few problems along the way. (But) we’ve proved to the world that persistence, patience, makes things happen."

On Beckham’s side is Miami mayor Francis Suarez.

“This is a deal where the citizens are going to get fair market value rent,” Suarez said during the post-vote rally.

“This is going to be privately funded. We’re going to get a 60-acre park, 23 acres of soccer field and an MLS team headed by Jorge Mas and David Beckham, who just care so much for the city.

“I mean, it could not be a better deal for the residents of the city of Miami.“
