Walmart Joins Growing Movement Taking Aim At Stricter Gun Sales, Policies

By Barry Janoff

February 28, 2018: Global retail giant Walmart has joined Dick’s Sporting Goods and others to make overhauls in their policies regarding the sale of guns, while also urging lawmakers to take measures to initiate or improve existing laws regarding the sale of guns.

The moves by Walmart and Dick’s this week were empowered in large part by the killing of 14 students and three staff members by an intruder with an assault weapon in Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. on Feb. 14, and the subsequent voices of the surviving student body to speak out publicly about the need for stricter gun control and weapon sales.

That tragedy followed the death of 58 people and wounding of more than 850 others by a man with assault weapons at an outdoor concert in Las Vegas this past October and the death of 26 people and wounding of 20 others in November during a shooting by an intruder with an assault weapon in the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

“In light of recent events, we’ve taken an opportunity to review our policy on firearm sales,” Walmart said in a statement. “Going forward, we are raising the age restriction for purchase of firearms and ammunition to 21 years of age. We will update our processes as quickly as possible to implement this change.”

Walmart said it ended sales of modern sporting rifles, including the AR-15, in 2015.

“We also do not sell handguns, except in Alaska where we feel we should continue to offer them to our customers.

“Additionally, we do not sell bump stocks, high-capacity magazines and similar accessories. We have a process to monitor our eCommerce marketplace and ensure our policies are applied,” said Walmart.

Walmart has stores in 50 states and Puerto Rico and has aan estimated 2.3 million employees worldwide. It said that “each week, over 260 million customers and members visit our 11,695 stores under 59 banners in 28 countries and e-commerce Web sites in 11 countries.”

The company reported fiscal year 2017 revenue of $485.9 billion.

Dick’s Sporting Goods this week said it would no longer sell assault-style rifles in its 35 Field & Stream stores, having “already removed them from all Dick’s stores after the Sandy Hook massacre” in 2012 when 28 students and staff members were killed by an intruder with assault weapons; would no longer sell firearms to anyone under 21 years of age and would no longer sell high capacity magazines.

“We at Dick’s Sporting Goods are deeply disturbed and saddened by the tragic events in Parkland. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims and their loved ones,” Edward Stack, chairman and CEO for Pittsburgh, PA-based Dick’s wrote in a letter posted on the company’s Web site.

“But thoughts and prayers are not enough. We have tremendous respect and admiration for the students organizing and making their voices heard regarding gun violence in schools and elsewhere in our country.

“We have heard you. The nation has heard you,” wrote Stack.

A growing number of companies have either cut alliances with or pulled back on benefits and discounts for the NRA.

Included are: Alamo Car Rental, Allied Van Lines, Delta, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, First National Bank of Omaha, Hertz, Lifelock, MetLife, National Car Rental, North AmericanVan Line, Norton Antivirus, Paramount RX, SimpleSafe, Starkey, TrueCar and United Airlines.

According to Walmart, “We take seriously our obligation to be a responsible seller of firearms and go beyond Federal law by requiring customers to pass a background check before purchasing any firearm. The law would allow the sale of a firearm if no response to a background check request has been received within three business days, but our policy prohibits the sale until an approval is given.

“We are also removing items from our Web site resembling assault-style rifles, including nonlethal airsoft guns and toys.

“Our heritage as a company has always been in serving sportsmen and hunters, and we will continue to do so in a responsible way.”
