NBA Warriors, LeBron Top MVPindex List Of Most Valuable In Social Media Sports

By Barry Janoff

December 20, 2018: The Golden State Warriors are not only the two-time defending NBA champions and winners of three of the past four NBA titles, but the team is the champion of social media among teams in the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL and MLS.

The Warriors social footprint is worth an estimated $512 million, with a total social media engagement of more than 282 million engagements between Jan. 1-Dec. 12, 2018, according to MVPindex, a social media sports and entertainment measurement and evaluation platform.

The team has almost six million followers on Twitter, more than 11.2 million followers on Facebook and some 10.3 million followers on Instagram.

Among its players, Stephen Curry has 13 million followers on Twitter and more than 8.2 million on Facebook; and Kevin Durant has 17.4 million followers on Twitter and more than 10.3 million on Facebook.

The NBA has four of the Top Five spots on the MVPindex Engagement Value Assessment list, with the Warriors followed by the Cleveland Cavaliers ($365 million), Los Angeles Lakers ($294 million) and the Boston Celtics at No. 5 ($180 million).

MVPiindex said its EVA is based on engagements including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube from Jan. 1-Dec. 12, 2018.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are No. 4 overall with an EVA of $269 million.

The Dallas Cowboys are the NFL’s top franchise on the list at No. 6 overall with an EVA of $173 million.

The ranking of both the Cavaliers and Lakers were impacted by LeBron James, who moved from Cleveland to Los Angeles as a free agent during the summer.

According to MVPindex, “At the beginning of 2018, the Lakers already had more social followers than any other NBA team with 34 million, but the team added an additional three million with the addition of the league's top player.

“Not only have they added followers, but the Lakers have also capitalized on James' social popularity to drive engagement up 69% vs. 2017) and, more importantly, to increase their social value by 36% to $78 million.”

James has 41.8 million followers on Twitter (the most among all pro athletes in the U.S. and second in the world behind Cristiano Ronaldo’s 75.6 million) and nearly 123 million on Facebook (also tops among all pro athletes in the U.S.).

Among the Top 50 most valuable team in U.S. sports on social media in 2018, the MVPindex EVA includes 17 NFL teams, 14 NBA teams, 11 MLB teams and eight from the NHL.

The EVA Top 10 also includes the Houston Rockets ($164.9 million EVA), World Series champions Boston Red Sox ($163.8 million), New England Patriots ($151.9 million); and the Chicago Bulls ($139.1 million).

MVPindex said winning the Series helped the Red Sox generate 24.5 million more engagements versus 2017.

Concurrently, winning Super Bowl LII helped the Philadelphia Eagles double their overall engagement  (to 73.9 million) versus 2017. The Eagles finished No. 13 overall with an EVA of $111.5 million.

Fellow Philadelphia residents the 76ers also doubled their engagement versus 2017 (to 50.1 million), coming in No. 22 on the list with an EVA of $68.5 million.

The year's highest-performing NHL team was the Pittsburgh Penguins at No. 25 overall with an EVA of $66 million.

The Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals were No. 45 overall with an EVA of $40.6 million.

The top MLS team was league champion Atlanta United at No. 64 with an EVA of $27 million.

MVPindex said its MVPindex Engagement Value Assessment evaluates all of the social activity throughout the past year to determine the potential market value of a property's social media footprint, including but not limited to: Reach (fans, followers, impressions), Engagement (likes, comments, shares, retweets, favorites) and Conversation (positive/negative mentions).
