Forget Rams vs. Pats: It's Chicken Wings vs. Pizza For Super Bowl LIII Championship

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

January 23, 2019:
The game on the field will see the Los Angeles Rams face the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LIII for the NFL crown.

The battle off the field will see pizza vs. chicken wings for the game day snacking crown.

According to the National Chicken Council, during Super Bowl weekend, people in the U.S. will eat a “record” 1.38 billion wings, some 27 million more (+2%) than the previous record in 2018 and 47 million more than the total in 2017.

According to the Washington D.C.-based NCC, “Laid end-to-end, the 1.38 billion wings would stretch back and forth 28 times from the Patriots’ home stadium Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts to to the Rams Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.”

Or circle the Earth three times.

It would also be enough to put 640 wings on each seat in all 31 NFL stadiums.

Pizza Hut will hear none of that.

Pizza Hut anticipates selling more than 1.5 million pizzas during Super Bowl LIII.

That's enough pizza to give every fan inside the Super Bowl LIII stadium in Atlanta 25 pizzas each —  200 slices per person. The most popular pizza topping: pepperoni.

Pizza Hut — being renamed Pizza Hut-Hut for the duration — said its drivers will log nearly 5 million miles on Super Bowl Sunday.

The week of Super Bowl, a limited-edition Super Bowl LIII fleet of pizza delivery vehicles, powered by fellow NFL sponsor Hyundai and its Santa Fe SUV, will hit the streets of Atlanta.

Marketing support includes on-site activation with NFL players JuJu Smith-Schuster and Antonio Brown.

The National Chicken Council figures people will be eating so much  chicken that they’ll need a day off from work, and is asking everyone to sign a petition to declare Feb. 4 a national holiday:  “National Chicken Wing Appreciation Day.”

“There will be no wing shortage,” NCC spokesperson Tom Super said via the organization. “Whether you’re a fan of the left wing or the right wing, there’s no debate about America’s favorite Super Bowl food.

"Although we do anticipate an uptick in chicken cheesesteaks."

Ultimately, people might side with wings, especially if the game goes into overtime.

That would kick in an offer from Buffalo Wild Wings to give everyone in the U.S. a free snack-size order of wings on Feb. 18.

Although both the AFC and NFC championship games this season went into OT, it has happened just once in the big game, Super Bowl LI.

“We know fans get a thrill out of having something riding on the outcome of the game, and given the number of overtime games we’ve seen all season, we wanted to up the ante for everyone," Seth Freeman, Buffalo Wild Wings CMO, said via the company.
