WNBA All-Star Game Heading To Chicago, Hosted By Defending Champion Sky

By Barry Janoffd

April 29, 2022: There's a reason they call it the "Win-dy" City: In 2021, the Chicago Sky won the WNBA championship.

In 2022, the Sky get to host the WNBA All-Star Game.

The league has named Chicago’s Wintrust Arena as the site for the  AT&T WNBA All-Star 2022, scheduled for July 10 (ABC), a WNBA first for the city.

The league said the All-Star Game would be the the centerpiece of a weekend full of WNBA activities, anchored by the new new, two-day, “WNBA Live” in McCormick Place, which will also host the 2022 Nike Tournament of Champions and the Girls Nike Nationals.

The interactive, indoor-outdoor event will “provide fans an opportunity to experience the intersection of the WNBA, entertainment and pop culture.”

“The WNBA is excited to bring AT&T WNBA All-Star 2022 and an innovative new ‘WNBA Live’ event to Chicago, a city that showed such electric support for the Chicago Sky and the WNBA throughout last season and especially during the WNBA Finals presented by YouTube TV,” WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said via the league.

“We are thrilled to turn AT&T WNBA All-Star 2022 into a weekend-long event that will give WNBA fans incredible opportunities to engage with our brand and partners who have stepped up to support the WNBA.”

On July 9, the two WNBA All-Star teams are scheduled to conduct practices in McCormick Place, to be followed by the 2022 Mtn Dew 3-Point Contest and WNBA Skills Challenge (ESPN).

The league said more details regarding ‘WNBA Live’ would be unveiled prior to the event.

“As we are continuing to grow the footprint of the Sky and the WNBA, there is no better way to do it than to have the great stars of our WNBA galaxy gathered in Chicago for AT&T WNBA All-Star 2022,” Sky President and CEO Adam Fox said via the team.

“It’s great for the city, great for the league, and it further solidifies our place in the sports fabric here in the city of Chicago.”

The 2019 and 2021 All-Star Games were held in Las Vegas. The league cancelled its 2020 All-Star Game due to COVID-19 protocols.

The 2022 WNBA regular season is scheduled to start May 6 and run through Aug. 14. The WNBA Playoffs presented by Google are scheduled to begin Aug. 17.

“I look forward to welcoming the WNBA All-Star 2022 championship and festivities to our city,” Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said via the league.

“Chicago is a city of sports fans, and we’re thrilled to cheer on the Chicago Sky as they defend their title at Wintrust Arena. I’m grateful to AT&T and the WNBA for choosing Chicago for this exciting event as well as the Chicago Sky for continuing to represent the best of our city.”
