Is WNBA Taking A Gamble With New York Liberty, Foxwoods Casino Deal?

Rendition of New York Liberty jersey with Foxwoods logo.June 2, 2010: The New York Liberty have become the fourth WNBA team to sign a jersery-front deal, aligning with Foxwoods Resort Casino that will also include marketing and community efforts. Of greater historic importance, the union marks the first time a casino has placed its name on a U.S. pro sports jersey.

Financial terms of the multi-year deal were not disclosed. The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation owns and operates Foxwoods Resort Casino,

The WNBA already has entered into the once forbidden territory of gambling via its Connecticut Sun, which is owned by Mohegan Sun resort and casino and plays its home games at Mohegan Sun Arena., which also will host the WNBA All-Star Game July 10. In 2007, the NBA played its All-Star Game in Las Vegas.

The other WNBA teams with jersey-front sponsors are the Los Angeles Sparks (Farmers Insurance), Phoenix Mercury (Lifelock) and Seattle Storm (Microsoft's Bing).

The Liberty will debut its new uniforms when the team plays Connecticut on June 4.

The Foxwoods name and logo will appear on the front of the Liberty's home and road jerseys as well as shooting shirts for all games. Brand integration will also include extensive presence at Madison Square Garden during Liberty home games with courtside LED signage, logo presence on-court, a feature on GardenVision, Foxwoods branded on-court contests and signage on The Garden's outdoor marquees. The Liberty and Foxwoods said they also would join together to host a number of community events each season.

The Seattle Storm this season signed a deal with Bing that incudes jersey-front sponsorship."The New York Liberty has a passionate fan base in the world's largest media market, and we are thrilled by the opportunity this partnership presents to promote our brand to WNBA fans, the team's loyal followers and the New York Metropolitan area at large," Robert Victoria, CMO for Mashantucket Pequot Gaming Enterprises, said in a statement. "Foxwoods always strives to align itself with other best-in-class industry leaders, and we're confident we've done just that with this partnership of the Liberty and its home venue, the legendary Madison Square Garden."
