WNBA New York Liberty Sold To NBA Brooklyn Nets Billionaire Owner Tsai

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

January 23, 2019:
The New York Liberty, which began play as one of the WNBA’s eight original teams in 1997, has a new owner and in 2020 could have a new home venue.

They also are being connected to one of the biggest companies in the technology industry.

The WNBA and NBA Board of Governors have unanimously approved the purchase of the Liberty by an entity owned by Joseph Tsai and his family from the Madison Square Garden Company.

Financial terms were not released.

Tsai, along with his wife, Clara Wu Tsai, is 49% minority owner and alternate Governor of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets.

He also is an owner of the San Diego Seals in the National Lacrosse League and a founder of and executive vice-chairman with Alibaba Group, a China-based global technology company.

Tsai’s  net worth is about $3 billion, according to financial analysts.

Alibaba Group, founded in 1999, had nearly $40 billion in revenue in 2018.

“The Liberty and WNBA exemplify what it means to compete at the highest level, serve as role models in the local community, and bring greater opportunities to female athletes,” Tsai said via the WNBA.

“Our goal is to continue this important work and help bring the WNBA into its next phase of growth.”

The Liberty, which played in from 2012-17, moved to the Westchester County Center in White Plains (about 35 miles north of New York City) last season.

The team’s home arena for the 2019 season will remain the Westchester County Center, according to the WNBA.

The franchise could then move into Barclays Center, home for the Nets, or possibly the  Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum (Uniondale, NY), which is home a partial scheduled for the NHL’s Islanders and has a working relationship with Barclays Center.

“We are fortunate to welcome Joe Tsai to the WNBA family at a pivotal time for our league,” WNBA interim president Mark Tatum said via the league.

“We thank Jim Dolan and The Madison Square Garden Company for their incredible support of the WNBA over the past 22 years and for their commitment to finding the right owner for the Liberty. As active participants in the New York community, Joe and his team are very well-positioned to take the Liberty to exciting new heights.”

The WNBA will tip off its 23rd season on May 24, 2019.

This summer, the Liberty said they would host a Comm-UNITY Day celebrating community, diversity and inclusion during a game hosted at Barclays Center.

According to Jim Dolan, executive chairman and CEO for The Madison Square Garden Company, “As the proud owner of the Liberty for the past 22 years, we are pleased that Joe Tsai will now guide the franchise with a commitment to serving its loyal and passionate fans in New York.

“We will always be Liberty fans and extend Joe and the entire WNBA our best wishes for future success.”
