WNBA Players Assn. Signs Amalgamated Bank As Social Responsibility Partner

August 16, 2021: In it’s on-going effort to be proactive regarding social, racial and personal issues, the Women’s National Basketball Players Assn. has signed a deal naming Amalgamated Bank as its “official social responsibility partner.”

According to Amalgamated Bank, “As a values-based organization, we firmly believe in building a more just and sustainable world, and are proud to stand with the WNBPA in the fight for justice and equity for all. WNBPA players have long been at the forefront of social justice movements, and have never been afraid to use their voices and platforms to stand up for all.”

Amalgamated Bank said it has teamed with “three WNBA star players who embody this dedication”: Sue Bird (Seattle Storm), Natasha Cloud (Washington Mystics) and Elizabeth Williams (Atlanta Dream).

With the three players, Amalgamated Bank has created a series of "Shout Outs" that highlight the “very personal work that each player has done to further justice in three critical areas that we care about: gender, racial and voting equity.”

As part of the partnership, the Amalgamated Foundation has established the WNBPA Social Impact Fund, which will grant donations to organizations actively working to fight for change.

The grantees from this fund will include:
 
• SisterSONG, a national activist organization dedicated to reproductive justice for women of color.

• GLITS, providing housing and support services to the transgender community.

• Black Voters Matter, working to increase power in marginalized, predominantly Black communities.

• The New Georgia Project, a nonpartisan effort to register and civically engage the rising electorate in the state of Georgia.

• Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund, a nonprofit whose mission is to end discrimination and achieve equality for transgender people.

• National Council of Negro Women, with a mission is to lead, advocate for, and empower women of African descent, their families and communities.

Amalgamated Bank said grantees would receive a minimum of $2,500 by September 30th, and will be highlighted in a social media campaign to promote the partnership and raise contributions for the WNBPA Social Impact Fund. Grantees are encouraged to share on social media as well.

Grants will be distributed by the Amalgamated Bank's charitable partner, the Amalgamated Foundation, which has sole discretion over grants distributed from this fund.
