Sure Thing: WNBA Continues To Score Jersey-Front Sponsorship Deals

Players and executives from the Washington Mystics join with Inova reps to unveil their new deal and jerseys.April 7, 2011: In what executives called the largest deal in team history, the Washington Mystics have signed a multi-faceted "marquee partnership" with Inova Health System, which will be anchored with jersey-front branding on home and away jerseys, shooting shirts and community apparel beginning with 2011 WNBA season.

The Mystics are the fifth WNBA team to sign a jersey-front branding deal. The others are the Phoenix Mercury (Lifelock), Los Angeles Sparks (Farmers Insurance), Seattle Storm (Microsoft search engine Bing) and the New York Liberty (Foxwoods Resort Casino).

Financial terms of the alliance were not disclosed. Inova Health System is a not-for-profit healthcare system based in Northern Virginia that consists of hospitals and other health services.

The deal coincides with adidas unveiling WNBA uniforms with Revolution 30 technology and women’s basketball specific TechFit base layers. Revolution 30 uniforms, which were introduced by NBA players this season,  are 30% lighter and dry twice as fast as previous uniforms, according to adidas. All 12 WNBA teams will wear the new uniforms beginning this season, which tips off on June 3.  

As part of the alliance with the Mystics, Inova Health System will have signage and other touchpoints within Verizon Center and marketing that includes TV, print and Internet. Inova Health System also becomes the presenting partner of the Mystics and NBA Washington Wizards Youth Basketball Camps. Inova Health System will receive co-branding on signage pertaining to camps and clinics, in-arena recognition at all Mystics and Wizards home games and presence in marketing and social media platforms.

A major focus of the relationship will be to "design a program that will help improve the overall health of the community by promoting various initiatives and awareness programs."

Candace Parker models the Los Angeles Sparks new adidas jerseys, complete with Farmers Insurance jersey-front branding.According to Mystics' COO Greg Bibb, "We look forward to wearing the Inova name on our uniform with great pride while we work together with their outstanding personnel to create a platform focused on childhood obesity, women’s health issues and preventative health."

Inova's first public on-court role with the Mystics will be during a scrimmage against the visiting China national women's basketball team on May 23. On May 26, Inova will be title sponsor of the Mystics’ third annual School Day Game, a pre-season contest against the Chicago Sky during which students from the Washington metropolitan area will watch the game in conjunction with a variety of educational components.
