• In response to the mass shooting that occurred in the early hours of August 4, 2019, The Dayton Foundation has established the Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund.

• NBC Sports Group and World Rugby today signed a four-year partnership to exclusively present the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series across NBC Sports platforms in the U.S. through 2023. The HSBC Sevens Series was an NBC Sports property from 2010-2016.

• ESPN, X Games and MLB said that four more MLB clubs have joined the Shred Hate initiative, described as a “multi-faceted, innovative bullying prevention program striving to put an end to bullying in schools by encouraging youth to choose kindness.

The Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, New York Yankees and Oakland A’s will “support Shred Hate bullying prevention efforts and have the No Bully methodology implemented within select schools in their markets throughout the 2019-2020 academic year.”

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates are returning to the initiative for a second consecutive year. Other MLB clubs have also been part of the initiative, which launched in 2017.

• The Museum of Ice Cream — a hands-on destination that serves homemade ice cream and offers such activities as cookie carousel to a slide that leads into a pool filled with rainbow sprinkles — will add to its original (2016) San Francisco location with the opening of a second location, in New York City’s Soho (555 Broadway), spanning almost 25,000 square feet over three floors.

• On the same day that Naomi Osaka was named the No. 1 seed for the upcoming U.S. Open, the two-time Grand Slam winner has signed a deal with Hyperice, a recovery and performance technology brand that specializes in vibration and percussion fitness devices. She joins such athletes as Blake Griffin and Lindsey Vonn on the roster. Full story here.
 

• Kellogg's Frosted Flakes has signed a deal to become title sponsor for the renamed Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.  The postseason CFB game will feature teams from the ACC and Pac-12 in the Sun Bowl, El Paso, Texas, on Dec. 31, 2019, and will air for the 52nd consecutive year on CBS. The game was known as the Hyundai Bowl from 2010-18.

• The NFL said the Pro Bowl would return to Orlando's Camping Ground Stadium for the fourth successive year, scheduled for Jan. 26, 2020. It will air live on ESPN and ESPN Deportes and be simulcast on ABC (3 PM ET). Full story here.

• Pete Frates and Pat Quinn, co-founders of ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, have launched with The ALS Assn. the 5th anniversary of “Challenge Me” with a “new call to action to reignite the passion and generosity of the millions of people who dumped ice water on their heads in the summer of 2014.”

Hilary Knight, Top Women Pro Hockey Stars, Plan Boycott For Better Conditions

May 3, 2019: Key players from the National Women’s Hockey League, including national and Olympic stars Hilary Knight (pictured), Kendall Coyne Schofield and Marie Philip-Poulin, said in a statement they would not play pro hockey next season in a effort to put a spotlight on the current state of their game.

“We have come together, over 200 players strong, to say it is time to create a sustainable professional league for Women’s hockey,” they wrote in a statement. “We are coming together . . .  as one collective voice to help navigate the future and protect the players needs.

“We cannot make a sustainable living in the current state of the professional game. Having no health undulant and making as low as two thousand dollars a season means players can’t adequately train and prepare to play at the highest level.”

The move follows the recent decision of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League to fold after the past season.

In a video posted to social media, with the support of hockey brand Braun, the players explain, “Professional women’s hockey is essential. We need professional women’s hockey to inspire the next generation of female hockey players.

"If she can’t see it how can she dream to be it. Playing hockey teaches girls that they’re only as strong as their teammates. Playing hockey empowers girls to realize their limitless potential. We are innovators, and we are redefining women’s hockey. The Women’s Movement never stops."

Proponents of the boycott see the NHL as playing a major role, along the lines of the NBA and the WNBA.

Mary-Kay Messier, vp-global marketing for Bauer Hockey and a board member for the non-profit Play Like a Girl, stressed in a statement the importance of “continued support for women’s professional hockey opportunities” in the wake of the CWHL ceasing operations.

“I believe that in order to develop a long-term viable women’s professional hockey program, the National Hockey League must be in an ownership position. It’s not just about financial support. It’s about a longterm vision and the required resources, including the expertise, to effectively promote the women’s game.

“The NHL and its member clubs have the unique ability to leverage community connections and position the world’s top female athletes as ambassadors and role models, all of which will server to grow participation and inspire diversity in our hockey community," said Messier.

The NWHL released a statement from Dani Rylan, founder and commissioner, and other executives addressed to the “players, fans and supporters of the NWHL and women’s hockey.”

“NWHL leadership respects the wishes of all players to consider their options, and they know we are always available to meet, to participate in open communication addressing their concerns and exchanging ideas, and to collaborate with the players on one league.

“We are coming together as one collective voice to help navigate the future and protect the players needs."

“In the meantime, our plans continue for Season 5 of the NWHL to begin in October. After a series of highly constructive and positive discussions with the NWHL Players’ Association over the last month, we are offering increased salaries and a 50-50 revenue spilt from league-level sponsorships and media rights deals. Coming off an incredible 2018-19, we are confident another fantastic season is ahead."

According to Rylan, “After the CWHL announced it was ceasing operations, the NWHL immediately went to work and embraced the opportunity to build the one league for North America that many people, including the national team players, said they desired. We raised significant investments and met with top brands wanting to support one thriving league featuring the best of the best from around the world.

“Thanks to you, the NWHL’s efforts to advance the sport, build the value of women’s hockey players, and show future generations that they can See It, Dream It and Be It, will continue for many years to come. We are excited about the future, and we welcome everyone who wants to join us.”
