WWE: WrestleMania 34 Generated $175M In Economic Impact For New Orleans

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

November 12, 2018:
The NFL’s Saints are having a great in year in New Orleans, and so, too, is the WWE.

WWE said that WrestleMania 34, held on April 8 in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, generated $175 million in economic impact for the greater New Orleans region this past April.

That marks an increase of $33 million from the $142 million generated for WrestleMania 30 in New Orleans (2014) and the seventh consecutive year that WrestleMania generated more than $100 million in economic impact for its host region.

Over the past 12 years, WrestleMania has generated more than $1.2 billion in cumulative economic impact for the cities that have hosted the event, said WWE.

WrestleMania 34 also generated approximately $23.7 million in federal, state and local taxes, according to a study conducted for WWE and New Orleans by the Enigma Research Corp.

A big part of the attraction was the WrestleMania debut of Ronda Rousey, former UFC champion, who teamed with Kurt Angle to defeat Triple H and Stephanie McMahon.

“We were thrilled to have been a cornerstone event as part of the city’s Tricentennial Celebration, and that WrestleMania’s triumphant return to New Orleans once again generated an incredible economic windfall for the city,” John Saboor, WWE evp-special events, said via the company.

“The success of our weeklong celebration would not have been possible without the tireless support of the State of Louisiana, the City of New Orleans and all of the public and private sector partners throughout the region.”

WrestleMania 33 (2017) in the Orlando Citrus Bowl generated $181.5 million in direct, indirect and induced impact derived from spending in the Orlando region, still a WrestleMania record.

WWE earlier said that WrestleMania 34 broke the record for the Mercedes-Benz Superdome’s highest grossing entertainment event, grossing $14.1 million.

That figure surpassed the venue’s previous record of $10.9 million, which was set by WrestleMania 30.

WWE also reported the attendance was a sold-out crowd of 78,133, including people from all 50 states as well as 67 countries.

That figure was the sixth highest in WrestleMania history.

WrestleMania 32 (2016) holds the all-time attendance record for the event, 101,763 in AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas.

Highlights from the Enigma Research Corp. study for WrestleMania 34 include:

• $175 million in direct, indirect and induced impact derived from spending by visitors to New Orleans for WrestleMania 34.

• 77% of fans who attended WrestleMania were from outside the New Orleans region and stayed an average of 3.9 nights.

• $22 million was spent on hotels and accommodations within New Orleans.

• The economic impact derived from WrestleMania Week was equal to the creation of 1,583 full-time jobs for the area.

• $9.9 million was spent by visitors to New Orleans at area restaurants.

According to Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, “I would like to thank the WWE fans from around the world that descended on New Orleans for WrestleMania Week.

“We hope they enjoyed their visit, and more importantly, we hope to bring WrestleMania back to New Orleans in the future."

WrestleMania 35 is scheduled for April 7, 2019, live from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.

Tickets will be available Nov. 16. The event will be streamed live around the world on WWE Network.
