WWE Bringing Big Show WrestleMania 35 Back To The Big Apple, MetLife Stadium

By Barry Janoff

March 17, 2018: WWE’s WrestleMania is a big event that attracts a big audience and generates big business.

In 2019, it’s coming back to the Big Apple.

WWE said Friday that WrestleMania 35 would be staged in MetLife Stadium, on April 7, 2019, the second time the venue will host the event. MetLife is home to the NFL's Giants and Jets.

The news was shared during a media conference in MetLife that was attended by WWE chairman and CEO Vince McMahon, New Jersey Lt. Governor Shelia Oliver, WWE evp-special events (and host for the event) John Saboor, and Brett Yormark, CEO of Brooklyn Sports and Entertainment.

WWE talent in attendance included John Cena, Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, Nikki Bella, The New Day, Alexa Bliss, Nia Jax, Apollo, Titus O'Neil and WWE’s newest star, Ronda Rousey.

Players from the Giants were among others in attendance.

Also unveiled was the 35 official logo: the word WrestleMania splashed across the crown of the Statue of Liberty.

WWE has turned its mega-competition from a one-day to a week-long extravaganza, and the New York/New Jersey region will get the full treatment. MetLife Stadium is located in East Rutherford, NJ, about 13 miles across the George Washington Bridge northeast of New York City.

WWE’s WrestleMania Axxess is four-day interactive fan festival to be held in conjunction with WrestleMania 35.

WWE will also present four nights of events in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center (home of the NBA’s Nets).

WrestleMania 35 and ancillary events will be conducted in conjunction with New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, New York Giants, New York Jets; and NYC & Company, New York City's official marketing, tourism and partnership organization.

“On behalf of everyone at WWE, we thank Governor Murphy and all of our partners for bringing WrestleMania back home,” said Vince McMahon, WWE Chairman & CEO. “It is the one place that matches the energy, excitement and spectacle of WrestleMania.”

This will be the sixth time WrestleMania will take place in the New York area.

More than 80,600 people attended WrestleMania 29 in MetLife Stadium in 2013. WrestleMania 29 grossed an excess of $72 million and generated $101.2 million in economic impact for the New Jersey/New York region, according to a study conducted for WWE by the Enigma Research Corporation.

Top billing saw The Rock going head-to-head against John Cena and Triple H battling Brock Lesnar.

This numbers have since been eclipsed. WrestleMania 32 was held in AT&T Stadium, home for the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, with an announced attendance 101,763, a WrestleMania record.

WrestleMania 33 in the Orlando Citrus Bowl generated $181.5 million in direct, indirect and induced impact derived from spending in the Orlando region.

WWE said that marked a new record for WrestleMania and was the sixth consecutive year that WrestleMania generated more than $100 million in economic impact for its host region.

Over the past 11 years,WrestleMania has generated more than $1 billion in cumulative economic impact for the cities that have hosted the event, according to WWE.

This year, WrestleMania 34 is scheduled for Sunday, April 8 in the Mercedes-Benz SuperDome in New Orleans. It will be streamed live worldwide on WWE Network.

The first WrestleMania, in 1985, was held in Madison Square Garden with the featured event Hulk Hogan and Mr. T vs. Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff.

WrestleMania 2 in 1986 was staged in three venues on the same day, including Long Island’s Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. WrestleMania’s X and XX returned to The Garden.

As part of WrestleMania 35 week, WWE’s WrestleMania Axxess will be a four-day interactive fan festival.

The four nights of events in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center are scheduled to include the 2019 WWE Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony; NXT TakeOver; Monday Night Raw and SmackDown Live.

In addition, WWE said it would host more than a dozen community outreach events, including hospital visits and Be a STAR bullying prevention rallies, designed to give back to the local region.

WWE said that ticket and special Travel Packages would be available later this year.
