WTA Tour 2022 Update Adds Mexico, Keeps China Off The Year-End Schedule

May 17, 2022: The Hologic WTA Tour has released an updated tournament calendar for the 2022 season, with an end-of-year schedule that includes a mix of established WTA tournaments and new events for 2022.
A new 1000 Masters event is scheduled to be held in Guadalajara, Mexico, as well as the return of the San Diego Open 500, both in October.
Still off the schedule are any events in China.
That currently includes the season-ending WTA Finals, held last year in Guadalajara but originally scheduled this year in Shenzhen; and the WTA Elite Trophy, which had been planned for Zhuhai.
The WTA said that additional updates to the calendar “are expected and will be provided in due course, including the location of the WTA Finals, set to take place the week of Oct. 31.”
This past December, the WTA said it would suspend all events and tournaments in China regarding the situation over Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai.
The decision from Steve Simon, WTA chairman and CEO, came following weeks of concern over the health and safety of Chinese player Peng Shuai.
“While we now know where Peng is, I have serious doubts that she is free, safe and not subject to censorship, coercion and intimidation,” Simon wrote at the time in an open letter posted to the WTA Web site.
“The WTA has been clear on what is needed here, and we repeat our call for a full and transparent investigation — without censorship — into Peng Shuai’s sexual assault accusation.”
In March, in what was called the “largest global sponsorship in WTA history,” the women’s pro tennis tour signed a multi-year, multi-million dollar alliance naming Hologic as the global title sponsor and official health partner of the WTA Tour.
The pact is also the first worldwide sponsorship for Marborough, Mass-based Hologic, a medical technology company “primarily focused on improving women’s health.”
The global title sponsorship is the first for the WTA since Sony Ericsson in 2010.
“The 2022 WTA fall calendar will provide a robust amount of job opportunities for players in a regional calendar flow that will take us through to the end of the season,” Simon said via the WTA.
“I am extremely grateful to all of our tournament organizers for their support of women’s tennis and their commitment to staging world class Hologic WTA Tour events.”
Updates to the 2022 Hologic WTA Tour calendar include:
• 12 WTA 125 events throughout Europe and North and South America, bringing the total number of 125 events to at least 24 this season.
• July 25 WTA 250 BNP Paribas Poland Open relocates from Gdynia to Warsaw, Poland (July 25)
• WTA 250 Japan Women’s Open in Osaka, Japan (Sept. 12)
• WTA 500 Toray PPO Tennis in Tokyo, Japan; and WTA 250 Hana Bank Korea Open in Seoul, South Korea (Sept. 19)
• WTA 250 Tallinn Open in Tallinn, Estonia (Sept. 26)
WTA 500 J&T Banka Ostrava Open in Ostrava, Czech Republic; and WTA 250 Jasmin Open Tunisia in Monastir, Tunisia (Oct. 3)
• WTA 500 San Diego Open and WTA 250 Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca, Romania (Oct. 10)
• WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open Akron in Guadalajara, Mexico (Oct. 17).
