XFL Marks The Spot: Unveils Eight Cities, Stadiums, Details For 2020 Kickoff

By Barry Janoff

December 5, 2018: XFL officials including founder and chairman Vince McMahon and commissioner and CEO Oliver Luck had an official coming-out party today, unveiling the eight cities and venues that will drive the upstart league during its planned first season in 2020.

XFL said it would be playing in Dallas (Globe Life Park, Arlington TX), Houston (TDECU Stadium, University of Houston), Los Angeles (StubHub Center), New York (MetLife Stadium), Seattle (CenturyLink Field), St. Louis (The Dome America’s Center), Tampa Bay (Raymond James Stadium) and Washington D.C. (Audi Field).

Four of the venues currently house NFL teams: StubHub, MetLife, CenturyLink and Raymond James.

The XFL said that 30 cities expressed interest. The first year is scheduled to begin Feb. 8-9, 2020, the week after the NFL’s Super Bowl LIV. Season tickets are now on sale.

“It is ironic that it is about 20 years since we announced the original XFL,” said McMahon. “ A lot has changed, some things have not. I believe we were 20 years ahead of our time.

“This XFL is making long-term commitments (the first lasted one season). We will have innovative, exciting play. Digital, social media didn’t even exist. How people get the game and news has changed. What has not change is the love of football.”

Luck said the XLF is working to "truly reimagine football,” including a Reimagine Committee comprised of former players, coaches, media members, tech experts, medical professionals and others “to look at ways to take the game we all love and tweak it, modify it,  so that it’s familiar, but distinctive. Less stall and more ball.”

Representatives from each of the eight cities and/or venues were in attendance, each expressing their appreciation for an opportunity to play in the XFL.

“We like to think big,” said Luck. “Vince likes to think big. We are not looking for one-year deals with stadiums. This is a long-term partnership.”

The XFL is not the only league ramping up for play. The Alliance of American Football plans to launch its inaugural season in February 2019, starting play the Saturday after the NFL’s Super Bowl LIII (Feb. 3).

AAF, which has deals that include CBS Sports Network, Riddell, Starter and New Era, will have eight franchises, located in Atlanta, Birmingham, Memphis, Orlando, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Antonio and San Diego.

Should the AAF reach its second season, it could potentially start the same weekend as the XFL’s inaugural campaign.

Luck said that coaches, players, team names and logos would be signed and revealed beginning the first quarter of 2019. The league will test for PEDs, have an alliance with legal sports betting where applicable, have “ticket prices significantly lower than other sports in U.S. and players will be more accessible.”

The league will have “competitive salaries; each team will have the same budget,” said Luck.

McMahon and Luck stressed that the XFL would have a high priority on play health, a better flow with fewer in-game interruptions and seek input from fans.

“Launching in 2020 gives us time to get the game, fan experience and our partnerships right,” said Luck. “We believe we are well on our way.”
