Judgement Day: Yankees, Bonds Begin MLB Season As Hottest Tickets On StubHub

By Barry Janoff

March 27, 2018: With MLB’s 2018 Opening Day thisclose, ticket demand for season-opening games as well as rivalry games and games with unique and/or historic implications is on the rise.

StubHub, entering its 11th season as the official fan-to-fan ticket marketplace for MLB and its 30 clubs, says it sorted through its “wealth of data to find the hottest selling games and trending teams” heading into the season.

"As StubHub comes off another record-breaking World Series in terms of demand last season, we're feeling the excitement from baseball fans as we head into Opening Day 2018," Jill Krimmel, StubHub's General Manager of MLB, NCAA and All Other Sports, said in a statement.

"This season is significant for StubHub because for the first time fans will be able to purchase MLB tickets right up until game time for all 30 teams.,” said Krimmel.

The top-selling home opener this year both in demand and price — averaging $218 on StubHub — belongs to the New York Yankees, led by 2017 AL Rookie of the Year Aaron Judge and new teammate and reigning National League MVP Giancarlo Stanton, hosting the Tampa Bay Rays in Yankee Stadium.

Beyond home openers, the San Francisco Giants game on Aug. 11 during which Barry Bonds'  No. 25  Giants jersey will be retired “is the most anticipated moment of MLB's regular season," according to StubHub data.

The second most in-demand Opening Day game on StubHub features California and National League rivals Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants in the Giants' AT&T Park on April 7, averaging $212 on StubHub.

The Yankees are StubHub’s top-selling team in MLB overall going into the season, outselling the Giants and Boston Red Sox by 28% and 70%, respectively.

The Yankees moved up from No. 2 last year and No. 5 in 2016.

The Yankees have third highest growth in the league as demand in terms of ticket sales is up 61% from last year, “likely a result of the team’s off-season moves,” offers StubHub.

The Yankees replace the Chicago Cubs, which were the No. 1 in-demand team on StubHub last year following the team’s World Series win in 2015.

The Giants are currently the No. 2 most in-demand team, up from No. 4 last year after three years at No. 1 (2014-16).

The Top Five also includes the Red Sox, Dodgers and Cubs, respectively.

Coming off their 2017 World Series win, this is the first time in the last five years the Houston Astros at No. 8 have broken into StubHub’s Top Ten MLB teams going into the regular season.

Astros’ ticket sales are up 223% from this time last year, not only the highest growth among all MLB teams but also the highest year-over-year growth of regular season ticket sales over the last four seasons.

The Toronto Blue Jays have also been among the fastest-rising teams regarding ticket demand on StubHub over the past few years, entering the 2018 season at No. 9 after being as low as No. 22 in 2014.

The Yankees home opener against the Tampa Bay Rays currently outsells the Dodgers’ home opener, StubHub’s No. 2 top-selling home opening game (March 29), by 12%, according to StubHub.

Coming off a NL pennant and World Series appearance, the Dodgers‘ 2018 home opener is the “club’s best-selling in recent years and set to outpace the team’s 2017 home opener by 41% in ticket sales,” reports StubHub.

The Giants game in August, being played against Bonds’ other former team, the Pittsburgh Pirates, is currently outselling the second non-home opener in-demand game of the season, Dodgers at Giants on April 7, by 46%.

The first 20,000 fans in attendance on Aug. 11 will receive a No. 25 cap in honor of Bonds, who wore the number during his 15 years with San Francisco, from 1993-2007.

Three of five of the top selling non-home openers on StubHub involve the Giants and Dodgers, which StubHub said "is proving to be the most heated MLB rivalry heading into 2018."
