New York Yankees, Manchester City Unite For New Major League Soccer Team

By Barry Janoff

May 21, 2013: Major League Soccer took its second major league step into the New York Metropolitan area today when it was revealed that an expansion team, to be known as the New York City Football Club, would join the league in 2015.

NYCFC, which would be the 20th MLS club, will be majority owned by the ownership of Manchester City, from the English Premiere League, and minority owned by baseball's New York Yankees owners.

The team is expected to play in Yankee Stadium for at least one season until a new soccer-specific venue is built for the club. The New York Red Bulls already play in the area in their own stadium in New Jersey.

The Yankees and ManU already have a working relationship via Legends Hospitality, the stadium concessions business owned by the Yankees and Dallas Cowboys, which handles services at Etihad Stadium, Manchester City’s home stadium, as well as Yankee Stadium and Cowboys Stadium.

The rebooted New York Cosmos of the recently resurrected North American Soccer League had been seeking to become the second MLS team in the New York region, but the Yankees-ManCity deal now would seem to knock them out of the picture.

“New York is a legendary sports town, as well as a thriving global city with a rapidly expanding soccer fan base,” Ferran Soriano, CEO for Manchester City Football Club, said in a statement. “In the Yankees, we have found the absolute best partner for developing a world-class sports organization and a winning team that will carry the New York City Football Club name with pride.”
