Swing And A Hit: At $7.1B, New York Yankees Top MLB’s Most Valuable Teams

By Barry Janoff

March 23, 2023: MLB is heading into Opening Day 2023 on March 30 with numerous changes, including a pitch clock, larger bases and new rules on defensive alignments.

One thing has not changed: The New York Yankees are the most valuable franchise in MLB at $7.1 billion.

The Yankees have been MLB’s top-valued team every year since Forbes first published its Most Valuable MLB Teams list in December 1998. Back then, they were valued at about $500 million after winning the World Series.

The Yankees estimated value is up +18% from 2022.

By comparison, the average MLB team value increased 12% over the past year to $2.32 billion, according to Forbes, with revenue increasing 7.8% to $10.3 billion.

“Most of that money came from a 64% increase in ticket revenue, including the post-season and Spring Training.”

According to StubHub online ticket marketplace, the Yankees, with reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge, have reclaimed the No. 1 spot as the most in-demand team entering the 2023 season, replacing the Atlanta Braves, which last season took the No. 1 position from the Yankees after winning the 2021 World Series.

StubHub said the Yankees are outpacing the Braves in ticket sales “by almost 25%.”

In addition, the Yankees “draw the most global representation of any other team, with buyers from over 26 different countries and all 50 U.S. states.”

Forbes said MLB's 30 teams made about $2.3 billion in local television revenue in 2022, accounting for 22% of their total revenue.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are No. 2, valued at $4.8 billion, also up 18% over 2022.

The difference in value between the Yankees and Dodgers — $2.3 billion — is more than the value of 20 MLB teams.

World Series champion Houston Astros are No. 11 ($2.25 billion).

The most valuable team in the NFL — and among all sports franchises worldwide — is the Dallas Cowboys ($8B), according to Forbes.

The most valuable team in the NBA is the Golden State Warriors ($7B).
