Yankees ($4.6B) Continue To Reign (Green) As MLB’s Most Valuable Franchise

By Barry Janoff

April 11, 2019: The Dallas Cowboys are the most valuable sports franchise in the world, closing in on $5 billion.

A not-too-distant second in the U.S.: the New York Yankees, valued at a MLB-leading $4.6 billion, up from $4 billion last year, according to a new report from Forbes.

In 22 years of evaluating MLB teams, “The New York Yankees have been baseball’s most valuable team every year.”

Overall, MLB is seeing green: The average team is worth $1.78 billion, 8% more than a year ago.

Including the Yankees, five MLB teams are valued at more than $3 billion: Los Angeles Dodgers ($3.3 billion), the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox ($3.2 billion), Chicago Cubs ($3.1 billion) and San Francisco Giants ($3 billion).

By comparison, the average NBA team is worth $1.9 billion, up 13% over last year and three times the level of five years ago, according to a February report from Forbes.

The New York Knicks are the most valuable NBA team at $4 billion.

The 32 NFL franchises are valued at an average of $2.57 billion, with six teams valued at $3 billion or more each.

Over the past two-plus decades, the average MLB team value has increased at an 11% compound annual rate of growth.

Over the same span, NBA and NFL team values have increased 13% and 12%, respectively, according to Forbes.

The Yankees had local revenue of $712 million last year, the most in MLB and more than the bottom six teams combined.

The Dodgers had an operating income of $95 million last season, the most in baseball.

According Forbes, “MLB’s central revenue (mainly national television money that is shared equally) was $2.76 billion in 2018, while local revenue (ballpark and local television money) was $7.29 billion.

“Thus baseball’s pecking order is driven by ticket, sponsorship and local cable television deals.”

The New York Mets came in No. 6 (valued at $2.3 billion), followed in the Top Ten by the St. Louis Cardinals ($2.1 billion), Los Angeles Angels ($1.9 billion), Philadelphia Phillies ($1.85 billion) and Houston Astros ($1.775 billion).

Phillies and Angeles just signed two of the biggest player deals in MLB history: Bryce Harper (13-years, $330 million) and Mike Trout (12 years, $430 million), respectively.

At the other end, the teams valued the lowest by Forbes are No. 26 Oakland A’s ($1.1B), No. 27 Cincinnati Reds ($1.05B), No. 28 Kansas City Royals ($1.025B), No. 29 Tampa Bay Rays ($1.01B) and No. 30  Miami Marlins ($1B).
