Zion Drafted By NBA 2K: ‘I’m Not LeBron, I’m Trying To Be The Next Version Of Me’

By Barry Janoff

July 30, 2019: Zion Williamson has signed a deal with NBA 2K, and it seems the only thing he doesn’t like about it is his rating in NBA 2K20.

“It’s crazy, man. Nothing can really beat that,” Williamson, the NBA’s overall No. 1 draft pick by the New Orleans Pelicans, says in an intro spot, "Next Up," unveiling his alliance with 2K. I’m in the game. I don’t have to create my player — I’m already there. I’m excited about that.

“ I just have to get my 2K player rating up (from 81).”

2K said Williamson is the “highest-rated rookie in NBA 2K since 2011.”

By comparison, De’Aaron Rox (Sacramento Kings) is rated 86; Trae Young (Atlanta Hawks), Clint Cappella (Houston Rockets) and Jason Tatum (Celtics) are 85; Derrick Rose (Pistons) 80 and Pelicans teammate Lonzo Ball is 79.

Financial terms of the deal were not shared, which follows on the heels of Williamson signing a pact with Nike’s Jordan Brand valued at $75 million over five years, according to industry analysts.

NBA 2K said the agreement will include Williamson’s integration into various game initiatives, consumer events, brand creative, and social activations.

Williamson will make his video game debut in NBA 2K20 when it launches on Sept. 6.

“Zion represents the best of the NBA’s up and coming talent and we are excited to welcome him to Team 2K,” Jason Argent, svp-basketball operations for NBA 2K, said via the gaming company.

“For more than 20 years, NBA 2K has identified and worked with the best basketball talent in the world. It’s been incredible to witness what Zion can do on the court and we’re excited to grow with him throughout his career.”

Williamson joins an elite group of NBA athletes who have represented NBA 2K over the past two decades including Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, James Harden, Shaquille O’Neal, LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo,

The NBA 2K20 standard cover features Anthony Davis; Dwyane Wade is on the Legends Edition.

But it is another former NBA star after whom Williamson models his game.

“People think I’m ‘The Next.' I just want to get out there and play ball with my teammates,” Williamson offers in the intro spot. “We’ll see if I prove them right.

“My game was inspired by Michael Jordan. I loved the way he played. Offense and defense. His assassin mentality. I watched a lot of LeBron growing up. Kobe. T-Mac. Those are the best players. I felt I could take small potions of their game and somehow try to put it into mine.”

According to the rookie out of Duke, “I wouldn’t  have made it this far if I was just a dunker. I feel I’m an underrated passer. An underrated shooter. Obviously I can still work on both. But I don’t get enough credit for my overall game.

“My mindset is to try to win Rookie of the Year. It might not happen. But you’re thinking you can’t win it you’re starting off wrong.

“I’m excited to officially join Team 2K and be a part of this global phenomenon, where people around the world can play as me. I’m ready to put my imprint on basketball culture and be a part of the team that represents what’s next in the sport.

“Everyone is thinking I’m the next LeBron, or whoever. But I’m Zion and I’m trying to be the next version of me.’
